With the merger of the Village of Sutton, the Township of Georgina and the Township of North
Gwilliambury, the current day town of Georgina was incorporated in 1986. Located in south-
central Ontario the town makes up the northernmost municipality in the Regional Municipality
of York and also forms part of the boundary of the Greater Toronto Area. Although Georgina
is incorporated as a town, it operates as a township, in which dispersed communities share a
common administrative council. Some of the areas larger and more well known communities
include: Keswick; Sutton and Jackson’s Point.
Situated on the south-eastern shores of Lake Simcoe, the town of Georgina has come to be
known as ‘Getaway Country’ and considers itself to be the ‘Original Cottage Country.’ That
said, the area is known for its laid-back lakeside lifestyle and prides itself on all that it offers to
its residents and visitors. As such, Georgina offers a number of year-round activities spread out
amongst a variety of recreational facilities many beautiful public parks, beaches, forested areas
and conservation areas, which are sure to impress. The area is also home to a provincial park
(Sibbald Point Provincial Park), animal sanctuaries (Keswick Marsh Fish and Bird Sanctuaries)
and reserves (Morning Glory Provincial Nature Reserve). Add to this Georgina’s rich arts and
cultural attractions including museums, crafts and music festivals as well as theaters and one will
never be in search of something exciting to see and do, no matter what the season.
And these traits have not gone unnoticed as the town of Georgina has grown at a relatively fast
rate. This is due in large part to the number of beach lovers and as well as retirees wishing to
leave the hustle and bustle of urban and city living, to relax on areas many beautiful beaches
and swim in the cold, clear waters of Lake Simcoe. As a result, Georgina has seen its population
grow to 42,346, a change of 7.6% between the 2001 and 2006 Statistics Canada Census. To
accommodate this influx, the number of dwellings has also increased to over 15,500.
