Located on the western end of the Niagara Peninsula, in Southern Ontario, the City of
Hamilton wraps around the westernmost part of Lake Ontario. Situated near the geographic
centre of the Golden Horseshoe, Hamilton is positioned as the midway point between the cities
of Toronto and Buffalo, NY. But, with a population of 504559, Hamilton is not merely a city that
one just ‘passes through,’ as it has become the centre of a densely populated and
industrialized region, where many have chosen to live and work.
Traditionally, Hamilton’s economy has largely been based around the steel and heavy
manufacturing industry. However, brief downturns in the manufacturing sectors have led the
City of Hamilton to explore other economic avenues. As such, within the last decade, Hamilton
has seen a change from being a predominantly manufacturing based economy, towards a more
service based one. In particular, a large shift has been towards the health sciences sector, which
now provides employment for approximately 10,000 staff and services nearly 2.2 million people
in the region. Other major industries within the City of Hamilton include: educational services,
construction, finance, insurance and real estate.
Aside from being a city that is becoming economically diverse, the same could be said of the
people who make up Hamilton’s population. According to the 2006 Canadian Census,
more than 20 percent of Hamilton’s local population was born outside of Canada. This
ranks as the third highest in such proportion in Canada, training only to Toronto at 49% and
Vancouver at 39%. As of 2006, Hamilton had become home to more than 21,000 immigrants
having arrived in Canada between 2001 and 2006. Of this group, half were born in Asia and the
Middle East, while nearly one-quarter (23%) were from Europe.
With an educated workforce, stunning natural amenities along with a diverse and resilient
economy, it is not hard to see why Hamilton is quickly becoming a prime choice for future
opportunity. If you or someone you know are currently residing in Hamilton and are looking
