Located nearly 2 kilometres south of Lake Simcoe, is the former village, now suburban community of Sutton, Ontario (population 5000+ as of 2001). The transition from small village to small, but thriving community, took place through the amalgamation of Sutton with the Town of North Gwilliambury and the Town of Georgina, in 1971. Towns that surround the community of Sutton, include: Keswick to the west; Pefferlaw to the east; Jackson’s Point to the north and finally Mount Albert to the south.
Surrounding the community of Sutton Ontario is lush forestland and rolling farmlands. The south and southeast areas of Sutton are dominated by thick forests, spanning approximately 75 to 100 square kilometres and consisting largely of pine and numerous other varieties of coniferous trees. To the east and southwest are used primarily for farmland, which covers over 50 square kilometres towards the east.
Housing developments came in the mid-20th century to the northern part of Sutton and continued slowly, up until the 1980s, when there was construction of a subdivision approximately 2 km to the east. The subdivision has continued to expand throughout the 1980s and the early-1990s. Housing projects later slowed in the 1990s and the 2000s and the population has slowed, in relation. Cottages are also found in the area located along the shore of Lake Simcoe.
