The City of Welland is located in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, in Southern Ontario. The city is located in the centre of south Niagara, on the Welland Ship Canal, almost midway between Lakes Ontario and Erie. Welland is increasingly becoming a great place to be if you're looking for big City conveniences in a small town atmosphere.
During the 2006 Census, the population of the city was 50,331, making Welland the 86th largest city in Canada, a rise in population from 48,402 in the 2001 Census. Presently, Welland is one of only three communities in southern Ontario (excluding eastern Ontario) where Franco-Ontarians (as a percentage of the community's population) exceed the provincial average of 4.8%. Aside from a large francophone population, other ethnic groups include: English: 24.9%, French: 23.3%, Scottish: 14.4%, Italian: 13.3%, and Irish: 13.1%. There are also many people of eastern European origin from countries like Croatia, Hungary, and Poland, as well as a growing number of Colombians and Venezuelans.
When it comes to Welland’s industry and economic activity, manufacturing firms have traditionally been the biggest employers in the city. Companies such as Plymouth Cordage Company, Union Carbide and United Steel have had a substantial influence on shaping the City of Welland, early on. Today, companies such as John Deere and Lakeside Steel continue to employ a significant proportion of the city’s residents. Also, thanks to Welland’s large francophone population with its high degree of bilingualism, Canadian Tire Financial Services has opened two centres in the city, employing over 1,600 people and making the company Welland’s largest employer.
Not only is Welland a great place to live because of its rich cultural and economic diversity; there is also plenty to see and do for both residents and visitors. For instance, Welland has hundreds of acres of parks, fields and other sports and recreation facilities in addition to more than 25 neighbourhood parks, three outdoor pools, 30 baseball diamonds, three soccer pitches, five basketball courts, etc. And, thanks to Welland’s central location, the city is within, at most, a 30 minute drive to some of the finest golfing facilities in North America.
If you are thinking of locating in Welland, whether it is residential or commercial, land prices are very competitive and quite low when compared to other Ontario municipalities. The average price for a new single-family home is about $125,203 with a one bedroom apartment renting at an average of $600 a month.
