Situated within the much coveted Golden Horseshoe of Southern Ontario, the City of
Pickering is part of the Greater Toronto Area and falls under the Regional Municipality of
Durham. Located only a few kilometers east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario, Pickering
presents its residents with the unique blend of small-medium city living with convenient access
to big city excitement. Whether one travels via Highway 401, HWY 2 or GO Transit, the city of
Toronto and all it has to offer is merely minutes away.
Pickering has experienced rapid growth in the post-war period. Between 1996 and 2009,
the municipality experienced a growth rate of 12 percent (78,989 people to 100,273). However,
population growth has slowed off somewhat in recent years, increasing only slightly between
the 2001 and 2006 census, to a current population of 100,273. That said, the city has estimated
that by 2023, Pickering will be home to nearly 170,000 residences as the province of Ontario has
designated Pickering as one of two municipalities in Durham Region, as an urban growth centre.
Pickering is home to the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, which plays a strong part in
energizing the city’s economy as Ontario Power Generation, the plants’ operator,
is the largest single employer in the city. But, while OPG may be the city’s largest
employer, it is not the only one. A number of other well-known manufactures are also located in
the city. Major employers include Yorkville Sound, the Canadian headquarters of Purdue Pharma,
Hubbell Canada, PSB Speakers and Eco-Tec Inc. also play a large part of Pickering’s local
economy.
But, Pickering is not a city that is all about work, work, work; it also knows how to play. The
city offers a wide array of local activities and attractions, which cater to both residents as well as
out of town guests, who venture in, to check out all the sights and sounds that Pickering has to
offer. Some of the more popular attractions to be found in Pickering include: scenic biking and
hiking trails; restaurants that cook up a wide array of cultural experiences; historical tours of the
town; endless sports and recreation opportunities as well as convention and meeting facilities.
