The Township of Uxbridge is located approximately 40 km northeast of Metropolitan
Toronto, in the province of Ontario in Canada. The Township occupies the third largest
geographic area (41,232 hectare) of the 8 municipalities, which together form the Regional
Municipality of Durham. However, the Township is the 2nd smallest municipality in Durham
Region with a population of 19,169 in 2006, a 10.3% increase since 2006. The town boundaries of
Uxbridge include: the Town of Georgina to the north; Brock and Scugog Townships to the east;
to the south, the Town of Pickering and to the west of Uxbridge are the townships of Whitchurch-
Stouffville and East Gwilliambury.
Uxbridge is situated in a beautiful valley on the northern slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine,
about 64 km northeast of Toronto, Ontario. Today, the township serves mostly as a suburban
community, in northern Durham Region. Major manufacturing employers include Pine Valley
Packaging (packaging, containers and portable shelters), Koch-Glitsch Canada (mass transfer
systems) and Hela Canada (spice and ingredient manufacture). Due to its close proximity to the
City of Toronto and other major centres, a large proportion of Uxbridge residents find work in
other locales, including York and Durham regions and beyond. As such, Uxbridge is largely
considered a ‘bedroom community.’
Those that choose to call Uxbridge their home know that there is plenty to see and do in
this beautiful section of Southern Ontario. One characteristic perhaps the Town of Uxbridge is
most known for, is its plethora of hiking and biking trails. As a matter of fact, in the year 2009,
Uxbridge Township was awarded federal designation by Industry Canada as ‘The Trail
Capital of Canada.’ This resulted from Uxbridge boasting an unprecedented 220 kilometres
of managed trails on over 8,000 acres of protected greenspace. These trails take residents and
visitors alike on a serene trip through and alongside historic villages, mixed forests, meadows,
ponds, streams and wetlands. On top of this, a number of major trail systems pass through the
Township of Uxbridge, two of which include: the Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail.
